Two teenage girls were sentenced to the maximum for their role in a carjacking that led to the death of an UberEats driver, a Washington D.C. Superior Court spokesperson said. The teens, NBC News reported, pleaded guilty to the March 23 carjacking that left Mohammad Anwar, 66, dead.

In handing down a sentence on Tuesday (July 6) for one of the girls, who was 13 at the time of the crime, the judge described the carjacking as “terrible and devastating,” NBC Washington reported. The teen, now 14 years old, was sentenced to confinement at the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, which is the maximum sentence. The other girl, who is 15 years old, received the same sentence during a court appearance last month.

The girls are not being named because they are minors.

According to Metropolitan police, the teens attempted to carjack Anwar near Nationals Park, assaulting him with a stun gun. The vehicle crashed, and Anwar later died at a hospital. The 66-year-old was an immigrant from Pakistan who his family said came to the US in 2014 “to build a better life for himself and his family.”

“He was simply at work … providing for his family when his life was tragically taken in an appalling act of violence,” Anwar’s family wrote on a GoFundMe campaign site. “Words cannot describe how our family is feeling currently. We will carry him with us always, but it doesn’t take the pain away of losing him so tragically and so unexpectedly soon.”

Both of the girls were arrested and charged for murder and carjacking. The 13-year-old pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and the 15-year-old pleaded guilty to felony murder. The other charges against the girls were dropped.
