A Black Capitol police officer revealed he’s received hate mail after testifying before the Congressional January 6 Commission, describing in passionate detail the racism he endured during the violent attack.
Officer Harry Dunn told WTTG, that while he’s received a lot of support after giving his vivid testimony, there’s also been plenty of hate and racism.
The officer told the news outlet he’s received hate on Facebook, Twitter, and via email, describing racist images of him.
The FBI is investigating death threats made against another officer, Mike Fanone, who was also present during the riot and gave testimony at the hearing, though Dunn says he hasn’t received that level of threats yet.
“Not on that level. A bunch of hate mail. Whatever,” Dunn said. He added that he tries to pay attention to the hate and has a support system of family and friends and has been public about the mental health resources he’s used since the riot.
Four officers who defended lawmakers in the Capitol died by suicide since the attack, and “We don’t need to lose anybody else,” Dunn said.
During his testimony, Dunn said he was called the n-word by at least 20 rioters.
“No one had ever –– ever –– called me a ‘n***er’ while wearing the uniform of a Capitol Police officer,” Dunn testified during the July 27 hearing.
