Legendary director-actress-choreography Debbie Allen will be receiving some of her flowers at the upcoming Emmy Awards.
The Grey’s Anatomy actress was selected to receive the Television Academy’s 2021 Governors Award, Variety reported. The award comes “in recognition of her numerous contributions to the television medium through multiple creative forms and her philanthropic endeavors around the world.”
With a multi-faceted career spanning several decades, Allen was a clear pick for the Television Academy’s Board of Governors “for her unprecedented achievements in television and her commitment to inspire and engage marginalized youth through dance, theater, and mentorship,” the governing body said in a statement.
Allen will receive the award at the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards that air on CBS on September 19.
“This has been an amazing year for me,” Allen told Variety. “To be celebrated by the Television Academy is an overwhelming honor that humbles me and says to my community … if you stay passionate about your craft and do the work, you can go far.”
Some of Allen’s directing and producing credits include Fame, How to Get Away With Murder, A Different World, Everybody Hates Chris, Scandal, Empire, and Insecure. She’s led choreography for Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Lena Horne, and Dolly Parton ,to name a few.
The award is given to “an individual or organization in the television arts and sciences whose achievement is so exceptional and universal in nature that it goes beyond the scope of annual Emmy Awards recognition,” the org explained. TV-film mogul Tyler Perry and his foundation received the award last year.
