R. Kelly’s federal racketeering case began court proceedings this week with jurors being the only other people allowed in the courtroom to hear the case. Well, the judge in the trial had to remind one of Kelly’s attorneys about the rules after the lawyer got Twitter fingers in the middle of court proceedings.
“Didn’t I tell you not to speak to media?” US District Judge Ann Donnelly asked Thomas Farinella, Kelly’s defense lawyer, according to Court TV.
Farinella sent out a now-deleted tweet claiming the public “has only heard one side of the story in this case and this is about to change in the coming weeks.”
Prosecutors informed the court about Farniella’s tweet when jurors weren’t present. The tweet violated Donnelly’s rules against any of the lawyers in the case from speaking to the media in any form.
The first days of Kelly’s trial brought out explosive details of the singer’s alleged illegal marriage to the late Aaliyah. Jurors also heard testimony from some of the women violated by Kelly.
Kelly is facing federal racketeering charges in Brooklyn and is accused by prosecutors of running a criminal enterprise that systematically recruited women and girls for sex.
If convicted, Kelly faces 10 years to life in prison.
