Today is a big day in Hollywood as 23 films were awarded tax credits in the state of California. With this announcement, fans got a sneak peek at a number of new movies that are in the works at various film studios. Aziz Ansari is reportedly working on an untitled project and Kenya Barris is as well. Not to mention, there are Scarface and White Men Can't Jump reboots in the works. However, one project stands out above the rest. Netflix and Paramount are reportedly working with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and all-around star Eddie Murphy on the fourth installment of the Beverly Hills Cop series.
These 23 film projects will earn approximately $678 million in tax credits. They will also create 4,088 crew jobs, 873 cast opportunities and 40,621 background acting gigs.
“We look forward to welcoming this diverse blend of films and filmmakers to the tax credit program,” California Film Commission Executive Director Colleen Bell said.
This is not the first time that Murphy has worked with Netflix on a major comedy film. In 2019, Netflix released Dolemite Is My Name staring Murphy, Wesley Snipes, Keegan Michael Key and Craig Robinson. Murphy is also not shy when it comes to working on reboots. Earlier this year, he worked with Snipes, Rotimi, Teyana Taylor, Jermaine Fowler and Arsenio Hall to release Coming 2 America. While the film received mixed reviews from critics, approximately 1.27 million people watched the entire film during its first week on Amazon Prime.
Beyond films, Murphy is also planning a return to stand-up comedy in the near future.
"My plan was to do Dolemite, Saturday Night Live, Coming 2 America, and then do stand up. And then the pandemic hit, and it shut the whole s--- down," Murphy told Kevin Hart.
"When the pandemic is over and it's safe for everybody to go out and do it, then the plan is to do it."
