As the United States of America manages to get a handle on the latest surge of COVID-19 infections, Dr. Anthony Fauci has revealed when he believes the nation will get a handle on the pandemic.
“If we can get through this winter and get, really the majority — overwhelming majority — of the 90 million people who have not been vaccinated, vaccinated, I hope we can start to get some good control in the spring of 2022,” Fauci told Anderson Cooper on CNN.
“As we get into the spring, we could start getting back to a degree of normality, namely reassuming the things that we were hoping we could do — restaurants, theaters, that kind of thing."
Previously, Fauci told NPR that he didn't think America would be able to control the pandemic until fall 2022. Now, he's saying that he misspoke and he is somewhat optimistic about the end of the year. The chief White House medical adviser doubled down on his prediction during an interview with NBC's TODAY.
“If we do it right and get through the winter, I hope as we get to the spring of 2022, we'll get there,” Fauci repeated.
Fauci's predictions come with a bit of a caveat. While he is hopeful for spring 2022, the infectious disease expert reminds Americans that more people need to get vaccinated before his prediction can come true.
“It's up to us,” Fauci explained.
“If we keep lingering without getting those people vaccinated that should be vaccinated, this thing could linger on, leading to the development of another variant, which could complicate things.”
Thus far, 52% of Americans have been fully vaccinated. Unfortunately, cases have continued to rise in several different states across the country. As a result, things could get worse before they get better in 2022.
