Raven-Symone opened up recently about why she didn’t want her character on Raven’s Home to be a lesbian. Before the series started filming, the Disney star revealed what execs asked her about who her rebooted character would be.
“You know what, there was a conversation before the series started and I was asked the question, ‘Would you like Raven Baxter to be a lesbian?’ And I said, no. I said no,” Raven revealed in an interview with the Pride podcast.
“And the reason I said wasn’t because I wasn’t proud of who I was, or I didn’t want to represent the LGBTQ+ community in any way,” Raven, who came out as a lesbian in 2013, added. “It was because Raven Baxter is Raven Baxter is Raven Baxter.”
Raven’s Home, the follow-up series to the wildly popular That’s So Raven of the early 2000s, premiered in 2017. Raven plays a divorced single mother raising her children alongside forever bestie Chelsea, played by Anneliese van der Pol in their shared home in Chicago.
“There was no reason for me to change the human that she was in order to fit the actress that played her,” the 35-year-old actress explained.
“And Raven Baxter is a character that I was proud to play, even if she is straight, cisgender, I don’t mind. Let her have her moment. She was divorced though, and I had no worries about saying, ‘No boyfriends.’
