ESPN announced Tuesday (February 1) that award-winning commentator Angela Rye will be joining their team as a special correspondent.
Rye is set to contribute essays, features, and commentaries across multiple shows and platforms within the sports network. The Seattle native will provide perspective on race, culture, and social justice within sports, like Jackie Robinson's impact on sports, Title IX, and changemakers at HBCUs.
Rye will also make in-studio appearances, the network announced, and will be producing stories under the ESPN Black History Always platform.
"Angela is one of the most talented and distinctive commentators of race and culture working today," David Roberts, ESPN Senior Vice President NBA & Studio Production said in a statement.
"Her connection and commitment to the Black community will serve this series of vitally important stories on African American athletes making history and a positive difference throughout the year," Roberts added. "We are thrilled she decided to join the ESPN family and look forward to collaborating."
"I am excited to join the talented team at ESPN," Rye said. "Sports play a critical role in our culture, bringing joy to us all in the midst of unprecedented challenges. I'm grateful for the opportunity to give culturally relevant stories a voice on this iconic platform."
Rye's contributions are set to begin this month.
