Senator Joe Manchin signaled Friday (March 25) that he will vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Manchin's announcement comes after a wave of Republic senators –– who include Mitch McConnell, Ted Cruz, and Lindsey Graham, so far –– flat out said they will vote against Judge Jackson's confirmation following four days of intense hearings before the Senate Judiciary committee.
None of the GOP members gave clear answers regarding Jackson's qualifications as to why they won't vote to confirm her. They did, however, vote to confirm Amy Coney Barrett who never argued an appeals case, to sit on the nation's highest court.
With Manchin's vote, experts say the math in the Senate points to a confirmation for Judge Jackson, who would be the first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court. If the Senate floor vote is evenly split 50-50, Vice President Kamala Harris would cast the deciding historic vote.
The committee is scheduled to meet on Monday (March 28) to discuss to move Jackson's nomination forward. Republicans will have a week before an April 4 committee vote takes place, followed by the Senate floor vote on Jackson's confirmation.
