New York Attorney General Letitia James asked a state court on Thursday (April 7) to hold former president Donald Trump in contempt after he failed to comply with a court order to hand over documents for her investigation.
Back in February, New York Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to "comply in full" with James' subpoena for her probe of his business dealings. That order included handing over relevant records and information James' needed.
James filed in court Thursday (April 7) stating that Trump "did not comply at all" with the subpoena for documents and his legal team hadn't turned over "any" records or information for the investigation because his attorneys said the Trump Organization would've produced them if they existed. The filing goes on to say that the Trump Organization said James' office "will just have to wait" until it "completes its production to get them." James extended a March 31 deadline for the records, but when the deadline came, the Trump Organization only submitted 16 objections to her subpoena.
In the meantime, James is asking the court to fine Trump $10,000 a day or any other amount the courts rules is "sufficient to coerce his compliance with the Court's February 2022 Order."
"Mr. Trump should now be held in civil contempt and fined," the filing states, adding that whatever he's fined should also be used to "compensate [the Office of the Attorney General] for its fees and costs associated with this motion."
James launched her investigation after her office discovered fraudulent financial records that were submitted to lenders by the Trump Organization. Earlier this year, Engoron also ruled that Trump's children, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. would need to testify, per James' subpoena, but those two are currently appealing the decision, CNN reported.
