One person was killed and at least five others were injured Saturday night (April 30) after gunfire broke out at the Mississippi Mudbug Festival in Jackson.
According to Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones, the person who died may have been shot by an officer after "there was an exchange of gunfire between at least 2 to 3 individuals in and around a vehicle." According to CNN, the people injured in the shooting are listed in "stable" condition.
Officers from different law enforcement agencies working the event responded to gunfire around 10 p.m.
"We believe one of the law enforcement personnel discharged his weapon, and we believe at this particular time that the victim is deceased possibly due to the officer-involved shooting," Jones said during a news conference after the shooting.
"We believe the individual that is deceased was actively involved in the incident that was reported regarding the gunfire and regarding the several shots that were fired," Jones continued. At least two people were detained for questioning in the shooting.
Jones confirmed that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is launching a probe into the shooting and will turn in their findings to the District Attorney's Office.
Details around what started the shooting remain unclear at this time. The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, which oversees the Mudbug Festival, canceled the remainder of the events scheduled. The festival began on Wednesday (April 27) and marked the event's second year.
