Dave Chappelle returned to the stage Thursday night (May 5) and opened up about his recent on-stage attack, revealing that he actually talked to the man who tackled him on stage.
According to TMZ, Chappelle performed at the Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip where the 48-year-old said he convinced the LAPD to let him speak to Isaiah Lee, the 23-year-old man accused of rushing the Hollywood Bowl stage armed with a replica gun.
"I needed to talk to him," and figure out Lee's motivation, Chappelle said. Well, the comedian said he got an answer: it was to get attention for Lee's grandmother who had been pushed out of her community because of gentrification.
Chappelle performed in front of a star-studded audience with the likes of Diddy, Chris Rock, and Kim Kardashian in attendance, the outlet reported. At one point Chris joined Dave on stage where they both joked about being attacked while performing.
"At least you got smacked by someone of repute. I got smacked by a homeless guy with leaves in his hair!" Chappelle reportedly said of Lee.
"I got smacked by the softest n––a that ever rapped," Rock said in response, referencing Will Smith who slapped him during the 94th Oscars.
Lee is not facing felony charges in the attack after the LA County District Attorney declined to prosecute. Instead, the case is at the LA City Attorney's Office for misdemeanor prosecution and has charged Lee for four crimes.
