The body of 14-year-old Brandy Wilson was recovered from the Mississippi River on Thursday (May 5), nearly two weeks after she and two other children slipped into the water.
"Last night's tragic news on the recovery of the body of 14-year-old Brandy Wilson from the Mississippi River breaks my heart," New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a statement.
The teen, along with her eight-year-old sister Ally Wilson and 15-year-old Kevin Poole, Jr were last seen on April 23 when they ended up in the river near the Crescent City Connection Bridge in New Orleans.
Kevin Poole's body was recovered and identified on Monday (May 2).
A GoFundMe website launched on behalf of Poole Jr's family indicates that Brandy Wilson slipped into the river and the other two children got in to save her. Poole's younger brother was at the park at the time and got help after the three other children slipped into the water.
Last week, the girls' mother, Octavia Wilson, told WWL-TV that her older daughter took Ally to the park to play in order to give her a break.
"My daughter said she was trying to give me a break," Octavia Wilson said. "I don't need a break, I need my children."
The Wilson family has also started a GoFundMe website which states that Brandy was a "sheer delight" and enjoyed "singing with the choir at school and being around family and friends."
Of both sisters, the fundraiser says that "Being around them you’ll know they were full of love and life and always ready to have fun."
Officials have not yet recovered the body of Ally Wilson.
