At the Minneapolis intersection where George Floyd was killed by the hands of police, a candlelight vigil and other forms of remembrance will be held as Wednesday (May 25) marks the second anniversary of the 46-year-old Black man's death.

Civil rights activists and leaders planned the Minneapolis vigil along with a St. Paul rally at the governor's residence in remembrance of the day when former cop Derek Chauvin fatally knelt on Floyd's neck on May 25, 2020.

On Wednesday, the city will also officially formalize the intersection at 38th and Chicago Street as George Floyd Square marked by a street sign and an already-existing sculpture of a clenched fist.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a statement. “Today we honor two years since George Floyd was murdered by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin." Frey continued, “Each day since, we have remembered George Floyd’s life and legacy as a friend, father, brother, and loved one. His name has been heard in every corner of our world.”

Other remembrances taking place in Minneapolis include a Thursday (May 26) gathering of police brutality victims' families and on Friday (May 27), a fundraising gala for the preservation of items left by the community at the intersection of Floyd's death.

An all-day festival and a concert at George Floyd Square are also set for Saturday (May 28).

Frey said in a statement, “In Minneapolis, we will continue to say his name and honor his spirit.” He continued, “In these days of reflection and remembrance, we must lead with kindness towards one another – and especially look out for and support our Black friends and neighbors.”
