A slew of racist videos has surfaced on social media of Ohio high school students using racial slurs and reenacting the Ku Klux Klan.
In one of the videos, several students from Jackson High School and a parent are seen laughing as others repeatedly say the n-word, per Cleveland 19 News. Another video shows a student donning a white towel on his head.
"I'm in the KKK," text on the video reads.
Kenedi Satterfield, a Jackson High School student, said the videos were more than just hurtful.
“I don’t think hurt is the right word,” Satterfield said. “It was definitely more than hurt. I was disgusted and concerned for my own safety and other Black kids’ safety.”
On Monday (April 16), Jackson High students protested in the cafeteria over the racist videos that showed their peers using racial slurs.
In a statement to the Daily Beast, Superintendent Chris DiLoreto said the videos were "reprehensible and troubling.”
“The District does not tolerate discriminatory harassment based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, or ancestry which are protected by federal civil rights laws,” DiLoreto said.
“After looking into the matter, we have found some videos did not occur during the school day, on school property, or at a location/activity sponsored by the district. As such, the district legally does not have any oversight or disciplinary authority related to those videos,” the statement continued. “To the extent, any investigation shows our students violating our school policy or code of conduct, appropriate consequences will be, and have been, handed down.”
“Our school administrators look forward to continued conversations with our students and opportunities to learn and grow from these teachable moments," the superintendent said.
