The family of Amaree’ya Henderson is demanding justice and accountability after the Black DoorDash driver was shot and killed by Kansas police.
Henderson died on April 26 after he was pulled over by Kansas City police, per Newsone. Police haven't released many details surrounding the incident, but according to the family, Henderson was unarmed and didn't pose a threat to officers when he was fatally shot.
Henderson's mother said she was on the phone with her son during the moments before his death. Henderson asked his mother to come to the scene of the traffic stop before she said she overheard gunfire.
Henderson was accompanied in his car by his fiance, who said officers grabbed, pulled, and punched the DoorDash driver before shooting him twice.
According to the family's lawyers, the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office has failed to provide “critical” information surrounding Henderson’s death. The family hasn't had access to body camera or police dashboard footage of the fatal incident.
“The issue is that the family has a right, a legal right, to see the body cam footage,” family lawyer, Harper Williams, said in a statement.
The officer involved in the fatal shooting has been placed on leave but was granted "anonymity" by law enforcement, so the family is unaware of who killed Henderson, Williams said.
“We’re already fighting for the bodycam footage, we should at least know the officer’s name," the lawyer added.
Last week, protesters gathered at the Kansas City Police Department, demanding the release of body camera footage.
According to Kansas state law, police aren't required to share the footage with the public, but victims' family members have a right to a private viewing.
