Former Harvard professor and academic activist Cornel West is making a bid for the 2024 presidency.

On Monday (June 5), West announced on social media that he's running as a presidential candidate for the People's Party.

“I have decided to run for truth and justice, which takes the form of running for president of the United States as a candidate for the People’s Party,” West said in a video posted to Twitter. “I enter for the quest for truth. I enter for the quest of justice. And the presidency is just one vehicle we pursue that truth and justice.”

West is a known academic activist and scholar. He formerly worked for Havard University as a professor of the practice of public philosophy and was professor emeritus at Princeton University.

In Monday's video, West said he cares more about voters than other political parties.

“Neither political party wants to tell the truth about Wall Street, about Ukraine, about the Pentagon, about big tech,” West said. “Do we have what it takes? We shall see.”

The presidential candidate first left Harvard in 2002 following a series of disputes with then-university president Lawrence Summer. He again left Harvard in 2021 over a reported tenure dispute in which he accused the university of “intellectual and spiritual bankruptcy of deep depths.”

West currently serves as the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Chair at Union Theological Seminary.
