An Illinois man was shot and killed during a dispute over a pizza and bar tab.
On Friday (December 30), Dexter Perkins was visiting Rosie O'Reilly's in Wheaton when he got into an altercation with Michael Freund and two other men, per People.
A scuffle allegedly occurred outside of the bar between Perkins and one of the men before Freund pulled out a gun from his pocket and fired two "warning shots" in the air.
According to police, Perkins then "approached the other man at which time Freund, who was standing on the other side of a wooden railing, fired at him, striking him in the torso and in the face."
When DuPage County Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene they found Perkins dead.
An investigation into the incident found that the scuffle stemmed from a dispute over pizza and a bar tab. Perkins didn't know Freund or the other men involved in the incident.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin called the shooting a "senseless act of violence."
“Yesterday morning, Dexter Perkins lost his life allegedly over a dispute regarding pizza and a bar tab,” Berlin said in a statement.“For this senseless act of violence that resulted in the death of an innocent man, Mr. Freund now finds himself facing first-degree murder charges. I offer my sincere condolences to Dexter’s family and friends and wish them strength as they are now forced to continue their lives without the love and friendship they enjoyed with Dexter."
Freund has been charged with first-degree murder and is set to appear in court on January 18.
A GoFundMe page has been established in honor of Perkins, a father of two described as the "life of the party."
