NFL star Jalen Hurts is showing his support for a high school football player who was killed in his hometown of Houston.
According to reports, Hurts is paying for the funeral of Jarvon Coles, a North Shore High School football player who was fatally shot at a house party in Humble, Texas earlier this month.
Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the home in Humble on suspicion of underage drinking on March 9. According to police, people at the party told deputies that someone was having a seizure in the backyard. Deputies found the young man, later identified as Coles, had been shot in the chest.
Coles was taken to a hospital where he later died.
Hurts was reportedly moved to help his native community after hearing about Coles' death. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback played football at Channelview High School, a known rival of North Shore High School, which is located about five miles away.
The NFL star also sent a video message to Coles' family in the wake of his death. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston Mayor John Whitmire honored the football captain by declaring March 16 "Jarvon Coles Day."
