Nigeria's First Lady seemingly took aim at Meghan Markle after she visited the country earlier this month.
During a speaking engagement for the first anniversary of her husband's administration, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Tinubu, urged Nigerian women not to be influenced by American fashion following Markle's visit.
“We have to salvage our children,” the first lady said. “We see the way they dress. We are not having the Met Gala. And everyone, the nakedness, is just everywhere and the men are well-clothed.”
“Tell them we don’t accept nakedness in our culture," she added, noting that women don't need to "try to emulate film stars from America." "That is not beautiful. It’s not beautiful at all.”
The Senator's comments come after Prince Harry and Markle visited Nigeria for the first time.
At one point during the trip, Markle, who previously revealed she was 43 percent Nigerian, told a group of schoolchildren that she saw herself in them.
"As I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well. So it is a complete honor to have our first visit to Nigeria, be here with all of you," she said. "We believe in all of you, we believe in your futures, we believe in your ability to continue telling your stories and to just be honest with each other. There is no need to suffer in silence. Just make sure that you're taking care of yourselves."
Tinibu referred to Markle's visit during her speech.
“Why did Meghan come here looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with [us]. We know who we are. Don’t lose who you are,” the first lady said.
Tinibu also urged Nigerian women to be confident in their identity.
“They’re all beautiful girls, but they should be confident in who they are,” she said. “We are fashionable, we see what is going on.”
