Video of a virtual hearing is going viral after the defendant, a man with a suspended license, appeared via Zoom while driving his car.
In the video, Ann Arbor, Michigan judge Cedric Simpson appeared to be baffled as Corey Harris joined his hearing for a suspended license from behind the wheel earlier this month.
“Mr. Harris, are you driving?” Simpson asked.
"Actually, I’m pulling into my doctor’s office," Harris responded. “So, just give me one second. I’m parking right now.”
While Harris appeared to be focused on parking, Simpson was seemingly at a loss for words over the situation. The judge then asked Haris to confirm if he was stationary.
“I’m pulling in right now at this second,” the defendant said. “Yes, I am.”
A baffled Simpson asked Harris' public defender to confirm that he was appearing in court for a suspended license.
“Okay, so maybe I don’t understand something,” the judge said. “This is a ‘driving while suspended?’ ”
“That is correct, Your Honor,” the public defender replied to which Simpson again asked, “And he was just driving, and he didn’t have a license?”
“Those are the charges, Your Honor, yes,” the public defender said.
Silence ensued before the judge said, “I don’t even know why he would do that.”
Simpson then moved to revoke Harris' bond and ordered him to turn himself in.
“Defendant is to turn himself into the Washtenaw County jail by 6 p.m. today. Failure to turn himself in will result in a bench warrant with no bond,” Simpson said.
Harris was charged with driving with a suspended license in October 2023. He appeared to be in disbelief at the judge's decision to revoke his bond.
“Oh my God,” Harris said following Simpson's decision.
