Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) faced backlash from her peers after she refused to recognize Dr. Anthony Fauci's credentials, The Hill reports.
The backlash stemmed from Fauci, who served as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, testifying before the House Oversight and Accountability Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on Monday (June 3).
When it was Greene's turn to question Fauci, she refused to call him "doctor," instead referring to him as "Mr. Fauci."
“Do you think that’s appropriate? Do the American people deserve to be abused like that, Mr. Fauci, because you’re not ‘Dr.,’ you’re ‘Mr. Fauci’ in my few minutes,” she said.
Greene refused to recognize Fauci as a doctor while pressing him on requiring children to wear masks during the pandemic and the 6-foot social distancing guideline.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D) chimed in, questioning if Greene could refuse to recognize Fauci's credentials.
“Just in terms of the rules of decorum, are we allowed to deny that a doctor is a doctor just because we don’t want him to be a doctor?”
“Yes, because in my time, that man does not deserve to have a license. As a matter of fact, it should be revoked, and he belongs in jail,” Greene responded.
Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R), the chair of the committee, then ordered Greene to recognize Fauci as a doctor.
The GOP lawmaker later doubled down on her refusal, saying Fauci was "not respected." In response, Wenstrup urged members of the committee to follow decorum rules and be "mindful of their remarks."
Greene went on to suggest that Fauci should be charged for his alleged “crimes against humanity.”
“You know what this committee should be doing? We should be recommending you to be prosecuted. We should be writing a criminal referral because you should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. You belong in prison, Dr. Fauci,” Greene said.
