An Atlanta man has been arrested after he drove to Spartanburg County, South Carolina to take down a confederate flag along the highway, Live 5 News reports.

Jame Daniel Blitch was arrested and booked into Spartanburg County Detention Center on two counts of trespassing after attempting to take down the flag along Interstate 85 South.

The arrest came after deputies said they were called to a property Saturday (July 13) after a suspect, later identified as Blitch, climbed a fence with "No trespassing" signs.

Officials said Blitch told deputies that he was going to lower the confederate flag because he didn't agree with it being flown. According to deputies, Blitch reached the fence by climbing up a tree.

Blitch allegedly had multiple tools in his possession including a power tool and drill bits.

Blitch's vandalism attempt came after another one to the same flag on Friday (July 12), officials said.

Spartan County officials called for the removal of the flagpole in 2022, saying that it violated the county's land use ordinances. However, the Board of Zoning Appeals voted in favor of allowing the property's owner to keep their flag raised in 2023.
