A California man is facing charges after he allegedly fatally shot his girlfriend while she was driving her children, PEOPLE reports.
31-year-old Mandiko Kwadzo was convicted of first-degree murder last week in the July 2020 murder of Carliena Clayton.
Kwadzo's conviction comes after officers were called to a residence over reports of shots fired on July 27, 2020. According to a witness, Clayton and Kwadzo argued in the driveway of the residence before getting into a vehicle with four children.
A Sacramento County man later reported the sound of a gunshot and a vehicle going into the Sacramento River. The man said when he and his friend went to investigate the sound, they found the vehicle submerged in the river and Kwadzo “standing nearby the car not doing anything to help."
The two men pulled the young children out of the car to safety. Clayton was found without a pulse and "severe bleeding from her head." Authorities determined that Clayton was shot twice in the head.
Kwadzo is scheduled to be sentenced on September 6. He faces 53 years to life in prison.
