A California man who was caught on video hurling racial slurs at a Black family while driving has been found guilty of assault and hate crime.

62-year-old Tracy Robert Blackwell was convicted of one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon and a hate crime enhancement in connection to the May 2023 racist road rage incident, per CBS News.

On May 16, 2023, a Black mother was driving her three children toward a freeway on-ramp in Oakland when Blackwell cut across all lanes of traffic and pulled in front of her, according to court testimony and evidence. The mother honked at Blackwell as he nearly hit her vehicle. As their two vehicles went on-ramp onto the freeway, Blackwell hurled the N-word at the family.

Blackwell then pulled beside the family and continued to yell racial slurs and throw objects at their vehicle. The incident was recorded by a 14-year-old child in the car. Video shows Blackwell yelling the N-word several times and quickly steering his vehicle to the left, which nearly caused a collision.

According to prosecutors, Blackwell could face up to seven years in prison.
