ABC News anchor Linsey Davis was subjected to racist and sexist comments on social media following her moderation of the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
On Tuesday (September 10), Harris and Trump went head-to-head for the first time during the presidential debate in Philadelphia. The event was moderated by Davis and fellow ABC News colleague David Muir, both of whom had to repeatedly fact-check Trump on his comments throughout the night.
At one point during the debate, Davis had to shut down the former president's claims that some states allow for the "execution" of babies after birth.
“There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born,” Davis told Trump.
Trump also attempted to push a widely debunked claim that migrants in Springfield, Ohio are abducting and eating pet cats and dogs.
Though both moderators shut down misinformation from Trump during the debate, several social media users targeted Davis with derogatory comments.
One X user labeled Davis as an "idiot DEI moderator." Others called her a "nasty woman" and a "b****."
"Hey @abc, put a muzzle on your chick moderator," another X user said.
Amid the hateful comments, other users praised the moderators for stopping Trump from spreading misinformation.
"Btw David Muir and Linsey Davis are the most effective debate moderators we’ve seen since 2015 and any future debates should follow their example," one X user tweeted.
"Thank you @LinseyDavis for correcting the continued falsehoods @realDonaldTrump perpetuates about late term and post birth abortions," another person wrote.
