Conservative writer Rich Lowry is denying that he almost used the N-word to describe the Haitian migrants at the center of baseless claims in Springfield, Ohio.

During his appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show on Sunday (September 15), Lowry, the editor-in-chief of the conservative magazine The National Review, appeared to nearly utter the racial slur before correcting himself during a conversation about the false narrative surrounding Haitians stealing and eating pets.

“They’ve only found two Springfield residents calling to complain about Haitian..." Lowry said before seemingly using the N-word.

The conservative writer continued his thought, using the word "migrants."

“Only two calls, and I think one lesson in this whole story: People don’t care about geese. People really hate geese. All things considered, I think people would prefer Haitian migrants to come and take the geese off the golf course,” he said Sunday.

A clip of the interview went viral on social media, with one X user writing, "Having a hard time coming to any conclusion besides the obvious one about what Rich Lowry catches himself blurting out here.”

Andrew McCarthy, Lowry's colleague at the National Review, responded to the X post, coming to the writer's defense.

“Ridiculous,” McCarthy tweeted, “@richlowry (not tagged here, natch) obviously got crossed up between ‘immigrants’ (short i) and migrants (long i) -- started mispronouncing ‘migrants’ with short i; instantly corrected himself with no embarrassment because it was patently a mispronunciation. Geez.”

Lowry then replied to McCarthy's post, agreeing with his defense. "Yep, this is exactly what happened—I began to mispronounce the word “migrants” and caught myself halfway through," Lowry said.
