Louisiana Rep. Clay Higgins (R) went on a racist rant on social media about Haitians, which he later deleted after being called out by his House colleagues.

In his post on X, formerly Twitter, Higgins labeled Haitians as "thugs" and "gangsters," adding Haiti is the "nastiest county in the western hemisphere" and touting lies about migrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio.

"Lol. These Haitians are wild. Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters... but damned if they don't feel all sophisticated now, filing charges against our President and VP. All these thugs better get their mind right and their ass out of our country before January 20th," Higgins tweeted.

Higgins was confronted over the tweet on the House Floor Wednesday (September 25) as representatives met to vote on a spending bill to avert a government shutdown, per the Washington Post. Nevada Rep. Steven Horsford (D) asked Higgins to take the post down and introduced a censure resolution against him. In a statement, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D) added Higgins “must be held accountable for dishonorable conduct that is unbecoming of a Member of Congress.”

Higgins shared the racist post just days after former President Donald Trump said "You have to get them the hell out,” when speaking about legal immigrants in Springfield during his campaign stop in Pennsylvania. Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, have previously spread debunked claims about Haitians abducting and eating pets in Springfield.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) told reporters he spoke to Higgins about his post, after which the lawmaker “prayed about it and he regretted it and he pulled the post down.” Though Higgins deleted the tweet, he hadn't issued an apology as of Thursday (September 26) morning.
