On a very special edition of ALL THE SMOKE, Matt and Stak sat down for an exclusive interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election. The VP shared personal stories and weighed in on key social issues, giving her perspective on family, identity, and activism.
Kicking things off, Harris opened up about her first date with her now-husband, Doug Emhoff, which was set up by a close friend. “I just have a really bossy best friend. [...] She said to me, just go out with him once. Don’t Google him,” Harris recounted.
She also touched on the complexities of blended families, discussing her approach to step-parenting Ella and Cole Emhoff. Harris emphasized patience and respect: “I was very intentional about waiting until I knew that, okay, this is a real relationship, before I got to know the kids.”
Reflecting on her identity as a Black woman, Harris spoke directly about her sense of self. “I’m really clear about who I am, and if anybody else is not, they need to go through their own therapy,” she said. She also recalled her mother’s teachings: “My mother was very clear she was raising two Black girls to be two proud Black women, and that was never a question.”
In a later discussion during the episode, Harris highlighted the power of protest, saying, “There is no significant progress that we've made in our country without the people often taking to the streets.” She also spoke on mental health, especially in the Black community, emphasizing the need for care with dignity: “We need health care also from the neck up, and it has to be done in a way that gives people the dignity and respect they deserve.”
