A shooting in Ohio left one man dead and a local news reporter hospitalized.

On Monday (October 7), Lakewood police officers responded to a report of two people arguing. As officers were arriving at the scene, 911 callers said they heard gunshots go off, per PEOPLE.

Winnie Dortch, a reporter for WOIO 19 News, was found with one "serious" gunshot wound, and a man, identified as 34-year-old Bryant Cater, was found dead at the scene. Police believe Carter killed himself after shooting Dortch.

Dortch is reportedly recovering from surgery at MetroHealth Medical Center.

According to police, Dortch and Carter were familiar with each other.

A priest from St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church said they were both members of the Clifton Early Learning Center community.

"It's a tragedy," Father Kevin Elbert said. "This is so close to home. This is a tragic event. Any loss of life is a tragic event, especially in a place that's holy ground."

WOIO confirmed that Dortch's surgery "went well" during Monday's afternoon broadcast.

"This morning, our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack, She was immediately rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center and underwent surgery for her injuries," WOIO News Director Brian Sinclair said in a statement. "Our prayers are with her, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community."

Detectives are "conducting an ongoing investigation of the incident itself, as well as the nature of the relationship between the two involved parties, as it appears that they were familiar with each other," Lakewood police said.
