A former University of Kentucky student has been sentenced in connection to a racist attack against a Black student that was caught on video.
According to the Courier-Journal, 23-year-old Sophia Rosing was sentenced to a year in prison on Thursday (October 17) after pleading guilty to four counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of disorderly conduct, and public intoxication in connection to the 2022 attack on University of Kentucky student Kylah Spring.
Rosing attacked Spring while she was working in a campus residence hall. Video of the attack showed Rosing using the N-word repeatedly. Spring said Rosing hit her multiple times and kicked her in the stomach.
Rosing was arrested on the night of the attack and later expelled from the university. A grand jury indicted Rosing on six counts, including assault and public intoxication.
The former Kentucky student is set to serve her prison sentence under protective custody at the Fayette County Detention Center. Rosing was also ordered to perform 100 hours of community service by Fayette Circuit Judge Lucy Vanmeter.
Rosing's lawyer, Fred Peters, called the prison sentence "excessive."
“What she said was awful,” Peters said in a statement. “She got into a scuffle with the clerk and bit people on the hand, [but] I think she did not deserve a sentence of 12 months in prison for the very first offense in her life.”
