A Texas man has been convicted of capital murder after he strangled his two-year-old daughter while on FaceTime with his girlfriend and her father.

On Monday (January 13), jurors began deliberating on sentencing for Deontray Flanagan, who was convicted of the March 2023 murder of his daughter, Zevaya, per PEOPLE.

Prosecutors said Flanagan murdered his daughter after picking her up from daycare. Flanagan FaceTimed his Zevaya's mother, Kairsten Watson, and her grandfather, Curtis Watson, as he strangled and beat his daughter. Flanagan then drove wildly during a 45-minute police chase, which caused the two-year-old to be tossed around the vehicle, according to prosecutors.

Following the chase, Zevaya was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Watson testified that he and his daughter tried to reason with Flanagan as he beat the child.

"But then he showed me the lifeless corpse of my granddaughter," Curtis said. "I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. To have to go through that type of anguish and pain.”

"You may have taken her last breath, but you cannot kill her spirit, her memory, or her name,” he added in court, directly addressing Flanagan.
