Former Army Intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning has been sent back to jail Friday after she refused to answer questions from a federal grand jury in Virginia which was looking into the release of documents by Wikileaks.
U.S. District Judge Claude Hilton ordered Manning to jail Friday after she objected to the secrecy around the grand jury process. Hilton said Manning would remain in federal custody until she either testifies, or the grand jury completes its work on the case.
Before going into testify, Manning told reporters that she was prepared to go to jail for not giving testimony because she didn't believe in the grand jury process.
"I responded to each question with the following statement: ‘I object to the question and refuse to answer on the grounds that the question is in violation of my First, Fourth, and Sixth Amendment, and other statutory rights," Manning said in a statement.
"All of the substantive questions pertained to my disclosures of information to the public in 2010 — answers I provided in extensive testimony, during my court-martial in 2013," the statement said.
Manning's lawyers asked the court to place her in home confinement instead of the jail because of medical complications. The Judge denied the motion, saying the U.S. Marshals would be able to provide adequate medical care for her.
The former analyst was sentenced to 35 years in jail in 2010 after she was convicted of leaking thousands of military intelligence records to Wikileaks. Her sentence was commuted in 2017 by President Barack Obama in 2017.
