The Louisville Metro Police Department has released files from its internal investigation regarding the death of Breonna Taylor. News of the investigation was made public in September before the grand jury delivered its findings. Files from the investigation include interview transcripts, search warrants, personnel records, investigative letters, reports and other relevant materials. Most notably, the files include body camera footage from a SWAT team who reported to the scene of the shooting.
Newly released footage shows the SWAT team moving through her apartment for several minutes as Taylor's body lays motionless on the hallway floor. One officer can be heard saying, "She's done," as others attempt to check her pulse. Members of the SWAT team then move out of the apartment as a medical and forensic professionals enter the hallway.
Taylor, a medical technician, was killed on March 13 in her Louisville, Kentucky apartment. Officers obtained a search warrant for Taylor's apartment in an effort to find evidence for a narcotics investigation. Authorities were interested in Taylor's ex-boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover, but he lived at a different address at the time of the incident. He also claims that he had not made contact with Taylor in months.
After obtaining the warrant, Brett Hankinson, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove broke into Taylor's apartment. Under the impression that someone had broken into their home, Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired a warning shot. Soon thereafter, Mattingly was reportedly hit in the thigh, but a ballistics report showed no conclusive evidence that his wound was caused by Walker's firearm and not friendly fire. In response to the warning shot, officers fired wildly into the apartment, hitting Taylor seven times and endangering her neighbors.
Despite taking Taylor's life, only one officer is currently facing criminal charges. Former officer Brett Hankinson has been charged with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment for firing shots into neighboring apartments. However, no one was charged with killing Taylor. Meanwhile, the Louisville Metro Police Department opened up an internal investigation that is focused on the six officers involved in executing and obtaining the search warrant. At this time, it is unclear what the outcome of the internal investigation will be.
