LeBron James took to Instagram on Wednesday (November 4) to announce that his friend's sister, Ericka Weems, was recently murdered in Akron, Ohio.
According to the basketball star, the 37-year-old was murdered in her home. LeBron asked for prayers for his friend’s family who is seeking answers as to why Ericka was murdered and by whom.
AKRON OHIO!! My brother’s sister was murdered this past weekend in her home! My brother family need answers to why and by whom. My city I need y’all to go to work and find out who did this awful, shameful, disgusting thing to such a caring, loving angel! #Justice4EricaWeems
While police found Ericka unresponsive in her bedroom after entering her home on Monday (November 2), the police report said she was shot between October 31 and November 2, CNN reports.
"The investigation is still in its early stages. No suspects have been identified or arrested as of yet, but investigators remain optimistic," Police Lt. Michael A. Miller told the outlet.
According to the New York Daily News' Kristian Winfield, Ericka was the sister of Brandon Weems, who was promoted to the Cavaliers' director of scouting in 2017 and was a teammate of LeBron's at St. Mary-St. Vincent High School in Akron.
"[Ericka] had a passion and love for children," Brandon told CNN affiliate WEWS of his sister, who ran a day care at her residence."She could get kids to say and do things that even their parents couldn't do."
The four-time NBA champion has used his platform time & time again to fight racial injustice & calls to end police brutality. Throughout his time in the NBA bubble, LeBron was very vocal about arresting the cops that killed Breonna Taylor back in March.
