House Will Send Trump Impeachment Article To Senate On Monday

The House of Representatives will deliver a single article of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate on Monday (January 25). On January 13, Trump became the first president in history to be impeached twice when Congress charged him with "incitement of insurrection" after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol Building during a joint session of Congress.

"I have spoken to Speaker Pelosi, who informed me that the articles will be delivered to the Senate on Monday," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said.

The Senate has not determined when they will hold the trial. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is trying to delay the trial until mid-February to give Trump's legal team time to prepare his defense. A delay would also give the Senate more time to hold confirmation hearings for members of President Joe Biden's cabinet.

Schumer said he believes the Senate can handle its regular business while holding the impeachment trial.

"The Senate must and will do all three; COVID relief, confirmation of nominees, and impeachment trial," Schumer said.

"Make no mistake, a trial will be held in the United States Senate, and there will be a vote whether to convict the president," Schumer added.
