US Congressional candidate Gary Chambers got some help for his campaign to represent Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District. The “Queen of New Orleans Bounce” Big Freedia lended a hand in Chambers’ campaign, putting some bounce behind the message.
“The G, the A, the R, the Y, it’s Gary!” Big Freedia raps in a viral TikTok video. The lyrics in support of Chambers were put over a classic uptempo bounce beat, reminding people to “run to the polls” and “catch a vote” in support of Chambers, a long-time activist from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. "Do it for Gary," Big Freedia repeats in the song. "We got to win!"
Chambers isn’t new to making waves in a video, though. Last year, a video of Chambers speaking up and calling out school board members at a meeting for being dismissive during conversations about renaming schools named after confederate leaders went viral.
On January 4, Chambers officially announced his run for Congress, running a campaign platform that is “squarely centered around the priorities of the constituents of District 2,” according to his campaign website.
Chambers is running in a special election to fill the seat left by Cedric Richmond who became a senior advisor to President Joe Biden and the director of the White House Office of Public Engagement following November's election.
According to BallotPedia.org, the primary will be held March 20, 2021 with the general election taking place on April 24, 2021.
Chambers is one of 15 candidates running for the seat.
