Dominque Fishback has opted to team up with Jamie Foxx to adapt her one-woman play, Subverted. The play explores the life of an 18-year-old Black woman named Eden as she navigates young adulthood in the inner city. Fishback first performed the play as a student at Pace University as she pursued an MFA. In her efforts, she played more than a dozen different roles.
This is not the first time that the two have worked together. Last year, the duo led the Netflix film, Project Power. Led by Fishback, Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the film tells the story of an ex-cop and a former soldier who are searching for the source behind a dangerous drug that provides temporary superpowers. Project Power proved to be a major hit as it brought in a reported 75 million viewers in the first month of its release.
Fishback is not only celebrating the launch of her next project. She's also enjoying her recent accomplish at the African American Film Critics Association. Celebrating her portrayal of Deborah Johnson in Judas and the Black Messiah, she accepted the "Supporting Actress Prize" at the 12th annual AAFCA award ceremony.
“Playing Deborah Johnson changed my life in so many ways and to get this award is a cherry on top of a big, beautiful experience," she said.
“I want to thank, Mama Akua, formerly known as Deborah Johnson and Chairman Fred [Hampton] Jr. for allowing us the opportunity to attach ourselves to their legacy."
Moving forward, Fishback plans to develop Subverted while also filming The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey. She is set to star alongside Samuel L. Jackson in the upcoming Apple TV+ series.
