A British columnist was fired after tweeting a racist joke about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s newborn daughter, Lilibet Diana

“What a missed opportunity. They could have called it Georgina Floydina!” Sunday Telegraph columnist Julie Burchill tweeted Sunday (June 6) just hours after the couple announced the birth of their second child. The writer was let go from the outlet on Tuesday (June 8) two days after making the initial tweet, though she offered no apology for her words.

“I’ve been sacked by the Telegraph –– it’s been a lovely five years, and I’ll always be grateful to them for ending my Wilderness Years. However, I’d be lying if I said that I hadn’t often moaned to my husband recently about them always rejecting my *edgy* column ideas,” Burchill wrote on Facebook, as reported by The Huffington Post.

Others, like Joanna Toch, a lawyer and former Olympic athlete, joined in Burchill’s tweet. “No Doria? Don’t black names matter?” Toch wrote, referencing Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Burchill responded in another tweet that she “was hoping for Doria Oprah, the racist rotters,” to which Toch replied, “Doprah?”

Toch was suspended from the law firm she helped found and later deleted her tweets and walked back her words. “I am very sorry for the common and what I saw as a joke,” she wrote.

In March, Meghan and Harry sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a bombshell interview in which they revealed a member of the royal family had questioned what their son Archie’s skin complexion would be before he was born. The couple opened up about the racism Meghan endures even after having left the country.
