Last week, the Black Information Network shared the story of a Las Vegas woman who appeared on CNN, sharing the harrowing reality of potentially being evicted as the national moratorium expired.

The woman, Dasha Kelly, appeared on camera with three little girls and went on to receive more than $233,000 after her story was shared widely and support poured in.

In a turn of events, CNN has retracted the story after Kelly admitted she’s not the girls’ biological mother.

“Update: After CNN aired a story about her potential eviction, Dasha Kelly clarified to CNN that she is not the mother of the three children featured in the story. CNN has verified she takes care of the children in her home for periods of time. She says she originally described herself to CNN as a mother because she considers herself to be like one to them,” a statement from the network reads

CNN shared they also found out that the girls are also cared for by their mother Shadia Hilo and their father David Allison, who is Kelly’s boyfriend.

GoFundMe told CNN that the “funds will stay on hold until they verify her information. GoFundMe says no funds have been withdrawn,” the outlet reported.

The news outlet also reported that the girls are set to return to their biological mother’s home for the start of the school year while Kelly, who lost her job at a casino due to the pandemic, figures out her plans.
