Former President Bill Clinton has been admitted to the hospital at the University of California Irvine Medical Center's intensive care unit. CNN reports that Clinton is suffering from a urinary tract infection that has impacted his bloodstream.
"He was admitted to the ICU for close monitoring and administered IV antibiotics and fluids. He remains at the hospital for continuous monitoring," Dr. Alpesh Amin and Dr. Lisa Bardack stated.
Initially, Clinton traveled to California to attend an event for his foundation that was set to take place on Thursday. However, CNN reports that he began to feel fatigued on Tuesday and went to the hospital for testing. Shortly thereafter, he was admitted to the intensive care unit and former Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton attended the event to "represent both of them." She returned to the hospital after the event.
Doctors treating Clinton say that urologic infections are fairly common in elderly people. With that said, reports suggest Clinton will remain in the ICU for privacy reasons rather than the seriousness of his condition. The former President is reportedly in "good spirits" as he talks to family and friends.
"After two days of treatment, his white blood cell count is trending down and he is responding to antibiotics well. We hope to have him go home soon," Amin and Bardack explained.
"He is on the mend, in good spirits, and is incredibly thankful to the doctors, nurses, and staff providing him with excellent care," Clinton spokesman Angel Urena added, according to CNN.
