The news of Colin Powell's death swept political and military communities on Monday (October 18) as leaders remembered the general and first Black Secretary of State.
Powell's family announced his passing early Monday morning (October 18) in a statement on Facebook.
"General Colin L. Powell, former US Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19," the announcement reads, noting that Powell was fully vaccinated.
"We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment. We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and great American."
Tributes from political figures including former President George W. Bush, Stacey Abrams, Rev. Al Sharpton and others began to roll in following the announcement.
