Houston Texans Quarterback Deshaun Watson could soon be in a new city playing for a new team. On Wednesday afternoon, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported that the Texans and Miami Dolphins are nearing a deal that could land Watson in the AFC East. The Dolphins and Texans have talked about a trade involving Watson for a few months with little success. However, McClain reports that recent “talks have intensified into serious negotiations.”
Many of the details regarding the deal have remained under wraps, but NBC Sports reports that the Texans have asked for three first-round draft picks and two second-round picks in return. Texans beat reporter Coty M. Davis has also suggested that the Washington Football Team could be involved in the deal. Watson has a no-trade clause in his contracts, but it is likely that he would approve a deal to Miami.
News of a potential trade involving Deshaun Watson come after a tumultuous off-season for the quarterback. Shortly after the end of the 2020-2021 NFL season, Watson made it clear that he had no intention to return to the team or play for the new head coach, David Culley.
Weeks later, Watson was met with nearly two dozen accusations of sexual misconduct. Watson has not been charged yet, but the NFL, FBI and Houston Police have opened investigations into the matter.
"Too many times women have put up with behavior that we all know no one should put up with. Should we make excuses for the famous? Or those who hold special positions, or quarterbacks on a local professional football team? I don’t think so," Tony Buzbee, an attorney representing many of Watson's accusers, said.
Despite the number of accusations made against the star player, NFL Commissioner Roger Gooddell has not suspended Watson or placed him on the commissioner's exempt list. As a result, he is eligible to play this season. However, he has seemingly been sidelined in favor of Tyrod Taylor and Davis Mills until he is traded.
Watson nor the Texans have commented on trade rumors. The Texans will travel to Phoenix to play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
