Fans of a holiday cult classic, rejoice! There's a modern remake of The Preacher's Wife in the works.
The 1996 film starred the one and only Whitney Houston –– who also created a legendary movie soundtrack for the film –– Courtney B. Vance, Denzel Washington, Jennifer Lewis, Loretta Devine and many more. The film's original director, Anthony Hemingway has been secured to direct the present-day remake. Vance is also set to co-produce and appear in updated version, too.
"Christmas has always been my favorite time of year. To be re-imagining this classic and beloved holiday story is a gift. When Whitney Davis brought this idea to me, I instinctively called Courtney and we knew instantly that we'd be working together to bring this uplifting story to new audiences," Hemingway said in a statement, according to The Wrap.
For those not familiar with The Preacher's Wife, the movie follows the journey of a temporarily earthbound angel named Dudley (Washington) who precariously helps bring together the Biggs family at the holidays.
"This is a film that I hold close to my heart, and I recognize countless others feel the same way," Vance told the outlet.
No word yet on when we can expect the remake to be ready for theaters (and streaming) or how the story will be modernized. But, if you have a VHS copy of the film but no working VCR, The Preacher's Wife is available for rent on several platforms.
