Dak Prescott is apologizing for comments he made following the major loss the Dallas Cowboys had Sunday (January 16) against the San Francisco 49ers.

During a post game interview, the Cowboys quarterback was initially asked a question that said fans were throwing objects at his teammates out of anger over the loss, which Prescott said was "sad." But when he was told the objects were thrown at officials, Prescott said, "Credit to them then. Credit to them."

The 28-year-old was given a chance to walk back the remarks and opted not to.

In a series of tweets Tuesday (January 18), the football star apologized and said his words came in the wake of his team's "disappointing" loss.

"I deeply regret the comments I made regarding the officials after the game Sunday. I was caught up in the emotion of a disappointing loss and my words were uncalled for an unfair," he wrote to his 1.4 million followers.

"I hold the NFL Officials in the highest regard and have always respected their professionalism and the difficulty of their jobs. The safety of everyone who attends a game or participates on the field of a sporting event is a very serious matter," he added. "That was a mistake on my part, and I am sorry."

Prescott's apology comes after the NBA Referees Association condemned the remarks and suggestion of violence towards officials.

"As an NFL leader, he should know better," a tweet from the Association's official Twitter account reads. "We encourage the NFL to take action to discourage this deplorable behavior in the future."
