University of South Carolina Women's Basketball Coach Dawn Staley not only led the Gamecocks to victory over the weekend, she made history in the process.
Staley is now the first Black coach –– male or female –– to earn multiple NCAA Championship titles.
The historic victory came Sunday (April 3) when the Gamecocks suited up to play No. 2 seed University of Connecticut, and ended up beating them 64-49. The win ended UConn's undefeated streak in the championship title games.
"We played every possession like it was our last possession," Staley said, according to ABC News. "They were determined to be champions today."
South Carolina's guard Destanni Henderson made a career-high scoring record during the game with 26 points, while power forward Aliyah Boston scored 11 points and made 16 rebounds during this weekend's title game, getting redemption from last year's Final Four upset.
"Honestly, I've been thinking about this since last season," Boston told the outlet, referring to the layup she missed at the buzzer in 2021, which ended the Gamecocks' run in the championship. "Everyone had a picture of me crying. Today, we're national champions and I'm in tears," Boston added.
Boston was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.
Congratulations to the Gamecocks on their history-making win!
