Dave Chappelle was performing at the Hollywood Bowl in LA Tuesday night (May 3) when a man armed with a "replica gun" stormed the stage and tackled the comedian to the ground.
Videos of the incident and the onstage aftermath are making their way around social media. One clip, in particular, appears to show fellow comedian Chris Rock who had performed earlier in the evening walking up to Chappelle after security detained the attacker.
The two actor-comedians greeted each other before Rock grabbed the mic and quipped, "Is that Will Smith?" making a reference to the Oscars slap Smith handed to Chris during the 94th Annual Academy awards ceremony.
Officials with the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to NBC News that a man was taken into custody and that he was armed with what they described as a "replica gun" that has the ability to fire a "knife blade" when used properly. It's not clear whether the man used the weapon in the attack. Police said Chappelle was not injured.
Chappelle thanked Jamie Foxx who was in attendance and apparently helped security detain the attacker.
"Whenever you're in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff's hat," Chappelle said during a curtain call, according to multiple accounts.
