The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) has named 19 Historically Black Colleges and Universities the 2022 Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders, per a press release.

The Fulbright program gives students and scholars the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research in the U.S. and over 160 countries across the globe.

Out of the thousands of campuses that participate worldwide, 19 HBCUs were recognized for their engagement in the program, including hosting Fulbright scholars and students from other colleges and universities along with having their own students and staff receive Fulbrights to study, teach, or research abroad.

The Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders named by the ECA include Alcorn State University, Bennett College, Bluefield State University, Central State University, Delaware State University, Fayetteville State University, Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, Howard University, Huston-Tillotson University, Jarvis Christian University, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Mississippi Valley State University, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Spelman College, Tennessee State University, Texas Southern University, Tuskegee University, Virginia State University.

The State Department established the Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders Initiative to honor and applaud institutions utilizing the Fulbright Program and encourage others to follow suit in an effort to give more HBCU students access to the international experiences and perspectives that come from studying abroad.

“HBCUs are an important part of the American and global higher education communities, providing life-changing exchange opportunities for American and international students, faculty, and administrators alike,” said Lee Satterfield, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs.
