The end of an era.

On Thursday (September 29), Trevor Noah announced that he will be leaving the Daily Show after his seven-year tenure.

“I realized that after seven years, my time is up, but in the most beautiful way,” he told the audience. “I’ve loved hosting this show. It’s been one of my greatest challenges. It’s been one of my greatest joys. I’ve loved trying to figure out how to make people laugh even when the stories are particularly sh*tty on the worst days.”

He continued, "We've laughed together. We've cried together. But after seven years, I feel like it's time."

Noah went on to explain the reason behind his decision, sharing that after filming the show from home for nearly two-years due to COVID-19, he found himself wanting to get back on the road and pursue other oppurtunities.

"I spent two years in my apartment, not on the road, and when I got back out there again, I realized there's another part of my life I want to carry on exploring," he explained. "I miss learning other languages, going to other countries and putting on shows. I miss being everywhere and doing everything."

Noah added that he is and will always be forever grateful for his time on the show and joked that he's not just disappearing into thin air. "If I owe you money, I’ll still pay you,” he quipped.

Comedy Central, which has aired the Daily Show since 1996, also issued a statement expressing its gratitude to “Trevor for our amazing partnership over the past seven years. With no timetable for his departure, we’re working together on next steps.”

As “we look ahead, we’re excited for the next chapter in the 25+ year history of ‘The Daily Show’ as it continues to redefine culture through sharp and hilarious social commentary, helping audiences make sense of the world around them,” the statement continued.

Noah replaced Jon Stewart at the helm of the late-night show on September 28, 2015. Under Noah, the Daily Show snagged its fifth straight Emmy nomination this year for best variety talk series.
