Breonna Taylor's boyfriend has shared new details about the moment he found out his girlfriend was killed by Louisville police.
Kenny Walker, the only person to witness the fatal shooting of Taylor outside of police, opened up about the 2020 raid during an emotional interview on Tuesday's (October 11) episode of "Red Table Talk" with Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield Norris.
In a preview of the episode obtained by TODAY, Walker said he didn't know that Taylor had died after police opened fire in her Kentucky apartment.
Police were prompted to shoot after Walker, who believed an intruder was trying to break in, shot a gun when officers burst through the door of Taylor's apartment with a drug search warrant. One of the Louisville officers' 22 shots fatally hit Taylor in the chest.
Walker said he was unaware of Taylor's status because he was immediately taken into police custody. As he was being processed into jail, Walker found out that his girlfriend had died on the news.
“Now I’m knowing what they’re probably accusing me of at this point, so I’m scared,” Walker said. “They’re trying to ask me questions about me, and I’m like, ‘Listen, I’ll get to that. Where is Breonna? Is Breonna OK? Is she alive?’
“Nobody is answering my questions. So I had to find out what happened on the news, sitting in jail," he continued. "They didn’t say her name, but they said a woman was killed. That’s how I found out.”
Walker was initially charged with attempted murder of a police officer and assault, but his charges were dropped in May 2020, when Taylor's case garnered national attention. In August, four former Louisville police officers were charged with violating Taylor’s civil rights in the botched raid that led to her killing.
Tuesday's “Red Table Talk” episode also features Taylor’s mother and sister and includes Walker detailing each minute of body camera footage from the night of her death.
